Alfama, Lisbon

A palazzo in Alfama that kept its light

A 1780 house on a quiet lane above the river. Tall shuttered windows, a roof terrace over the Tejo and a table for ten in the old kitchen.

The chef's table: one long table laid for ten under the old beams, candles not yet lit

The chef's table

One table, ten chairs, and whatever the market had that morning.

Dinner is at eight, Thursday to Sunday, cooked in the old kitchen from what Ribeira market had at seven. Grilled fish, bread from the corner bakery, wine from the valley upriver. Guests only, and the ten chairs fill by Thursday.
